Your fund, compounding on parade

The Defence Services Officers' Provident Fund (and GPF for others) deducts a chosen subscription from pay every month and credits interest at the government-notified rate, currently in the 7% region and revised periodically. It is safe, disciplined and tax-efficient, the textbook foundation of a service career's savings.

Because the subscription is automatic and the rate steady, the fund's growth is beautifully predictable, which this calculator simulates month by month with a year-wise table.

How the fund is modelled

Each month: value = (value + subscription) x (1 + rate/12)\nRate: as notified by the government; enter the current rate.

Worked example: a Rs 15,000 monthly subscription at 7.1% for 20 years of remaining service builds a fund of about Rs 79,56,265 against Rs 36,00,000 subscribed, with interest contributing Rs 43,56,265.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DSOP rate fixed?

No, the government notifies it periodically, generally in line with GPF. The calculator keeps the rate editable; enter the currently notified figure.

Should I maximise my DSOP subscription?

DSOP is excellent safe money, but locking every spare rupee at a debt-like rate can under-serve long goals. Many officers pair a healthy DSOP with equity SIPs; the blend beats either alone.

How does the official crediting differ from this simulation?

Official interest is computed on monthly balances and credited annually; this monthly-compounded simulation tracks it very closely and errs marginally conservative.

What happens to DSOP at retirement?

The accumulated fund is paid out, and it often becomes the seed of the post-service portfolio. The Lumpsum calculator shows what deploying it well can do.
