Net worth is the single most honest scoreboard of financial progress. Track it yearly; the direction matters far more than the level.

The honest scoreboard

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. It cuts through salary comparisons and lifestyle noise: a high earner with matching EMIs can be worth less than a disciplined mid-level saver. Track it once a year, on the same date, and the trend tells you the truth.

Group assets the way households hold them: liquid money, market investments, property at realistic value, and retirement funds. Against them sit the home loan and everything else.

The equation

Assets      = cash and FDs + investments + property + retirement funds\nLiabilities = home loan + other loans\nNet worth   = assets - liabilities

Worked example: cash of Rs 5,00,000, investments of Rs 25,00,000, property worth Rs 60,00,000 and retirement funds of Rs 15,00,000 make Rs 1,05,00,000 of assets; against a Rs 30,00,000 home loan and Rs 4,00,000 of other loans, net worth is Rs 71,00,000.

Frequently asked questions

Should I count my house in net worth?

Yes, at a realistic market value, with the loan on the other side. Some planners also track an ex-home number, since you live in it rather than spend it; both views are useful.

What about gold, vehicles and insurance policies?

Gold yes, at market value. Vehicles depreciate fast; count them conservatively or not at all. Traditional policies count at surrender value, term insurance at zero (it is protection, not asset).

How fast should net worth grow?

Early on, savings drive it; later, returns do. A useful milestone ladder is 1x annual income by 30, 3x by 40, and accelerating thereafter, but direction beats benchmarks.

Why is a negative net worth not a disaster?

Early-career borrowers with education or home loans often start negative. What matters is the slope: consistent saving turns it positive surprisingly fast.
