Lumpsum = commuted portion x 12 x the commutation factor for your age next birthday (official table; 8.194 applies at a common retirement age). The commuted portion is restored after 15 years. Up to 50% can be commuted for defence pensioners.
The retirement day decision
At retirement, a pensioner may commute a portion of basic pension, up to 50% for defence personnel, receiving a lumpsum equal to the commuted amount times twelve times a commutation factor set by an official age-wise table. The monthly pension reduces by the commuted portion, and is restored after 15 years.
The lumpsum is attractive and useful, for a home, a child's wedding, or deployment into investments; the price is 15 years of lower pension. The right choice depends on health, needs and what the lumpsum will actually do.
The commutation arithmetic
Commuted portion = basic pension x commuted %\nLumpsum = portion x 12 x commutation factor (age-wise table)\nReduced pension = basic - portion, restored after 15 yearsWorked example: commuting 50% of a Rs 60,000 basic pension at a factor of 8.194 gives a lumpsum of about Rs 29,49,840; the pension reduces by Rs 30,000 to Rs 30,000 a month, and the commuted portion restores after 15 years.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the commutation factor come from?
An official table based on age next birthday at retirement; 8.194 corresponds to a common retirement age band. Enter the factor for your exact age from the table.
Is the commuted lumpsum taxable?
For government and defence pensioners, the commuted value received is exempt under current rules; taxation can differ for others. Confirm your case before deciding.
Is commuting financially worth it?
Roughly, you receive about 8 years of the commuted slice upfront and forgo it for 15. If the lumpsum is invested well or clears costly debt, the trade can favour you; if it merely sits idle, it usually does not. Note that dearness relief is generally computed on the full basic pension either way.
Does the pension really restore?
Yes, the commuted portion is restored after 15 years from the date of commutation, and dearness relief continues on the original basic throughout.
A one-time decision deserves a second opinion.
We help retiring officers weigh commutation against what the lumpsum will actually earn.
